Breast cancer is the diagnosis that every woman fears and with one in eight women diagnosed every day in the United States alone, it is certainly a diagnosis that can be enormously frightening.

Breast cancer treatment is as much about early detection as anything else because early detection and diagnosis, as with most malignancies, can mean all the difference in the world in terms of effective cancer treatment options and cure. So for women – as well as the thousands of men who are also effected by breast cancer – knowing what to look for and how to take care of yourself goes a long way towards breast health.

That’s why at Lewisville/Flower Mound Oncology Group we put an emphasis on prevention and early diagnosis, encouraging our patients to conduct monthly self breast examinations, to visit their doctor every year for a clinical breast exam, to go for a baseline mammogram at the age of 35 and for yearly mammograms starting at age 40 (unless risk factors such as family history, age, and more suggest that mammograms conducted more often – or starting at an earlier age – would be beneficial), and to request a breast ultrasound if the breast tissue is determined to be dense.

If breast cancer is diagnosed, there are a variety of cancer treatment options available including surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted radiation – sophisticated therapies that continue to emerge as developments are made in breast cancer care.

MammoSite Therapy

MammoSite therapy is an exciting – and extremely effective – treatment choice for those in early stage breast cancer. Typically performed following a lumpectomy, MammoSite therapy is a non-traditional form of radiation therapy. Once the tumor is removed, a small balloon is placed within the cavity. The balloon is then expanded so that radiation can be directed to that precise spot. This is a ten minute treatment that is typically administered two times a day for five days at a time – a far cry from the traditional 35 day cancer treatment. MammoSite therapy also allows for a lower rate of recurrence of the cancer and a much improved cosmetic result.

At Lewisville/Flower Mound Oncology Group, we offer our patients access to these sophisticated technologies in a supportive, healing environment.
